Bridge Testing

Today for inquiry we were testing our speghetti bridges and my group started off first. We put the bridge on a stable platform and had eight bricks to weigh down the bridge to make it snap, the aim of this activity was to see how many brick's it would take to hold and the type of bridge, for example there was a beam bridge, truss bridge, or some other bridges. Our speghetti bridge held three bricks and broke on the fourth one and the span of the bridge was 26cm, the next group had a span of 28cm and held only one brick, the next group had a span of 26.5cm and set a new record with five bricks. The next group held one brick and the span of their bridge was 42cm, the next group had the biggest bridge because their spam was 50cm and held two bricks. The group after that one had a small bridge with 16cm of spam and held three bricks so that was pretty cool to watch, there were heaps of of other groups that did testing on their bridges but the bridge that was most successful was Lyric, Tiava, Mataio, and Julians bridge because their one held all eight bricks and didn't move once, there structure was really good and really strong because they built a Truss bridge, and a Truss bridge has triangles for in its design. Triangles are the strongest shape and that is why their bridge could hold all eight bricks.

Special Duffy Assambly

Today we had a special Duffy assambly and we had a special duffy speaker which was our special guest Michel Mulipola, he is a illustrator, he illustrates comic books, School Journals, and he also illustrates WWE comics. Michel Mulipola is also a professional Wrestler and has won two championship belts, he has been to LA, Las Vegas, and has met heaps of superstar wrestlers like Dwayne the Rock Johnson, Stone cold steve austin, the Undertaker, and many more. Michel Mulipola's favourite superhero is the Green Lantern because he said that " The Green Lantern stands out to him because all the other superheros have primary colours like red, yellow, and blue but The Green Lantern has green, white and black colours whch were different to all the others. Michel Mulipola said he like what he does, he said he could draw whatever he wanted whenever he wanted and he said this " My pencil is like Green Lanterns ring whatever he thinks out comes out of his ring and makes it life like, just like my pencil whatever I think of I draw and make it come to life.

Wero Trip

Yesterday students from LS2 went on a trip to the Vector Wero Whitewater Rafting Park, as we walked through the entrance there was a huge artificial lake with rapids and something they called the pump drop which was the highest and the deepest whitewater rafting drop in New Zealand. When we got in we were waiting for the guides to set up the rafts, while we were waiting one of the guides took us to watch two videos, one was the Legend Of Maui and how New Zealand came to be and the safety video. After that we all put on wet suits on, a jacket, wet boots, and a life jacket then we jumped into groups of six and juped in a raft. The first activity we did was river crossing, our insrtructor taught us the safest and not safest ways to cross a river then we tried it ourselves, when we crossed it there was a rapid and it was pretty strong but we were put into groups of three out of the group of six and crossed it by making a triangle because it is the strongest shape. There was a technique we used and it was to grab the person in front by the shoulders of his or her life jacket and lean foward to help keep the person in front up, and we also went slow, grabing people by the shoulders of thier life jacket is a good technique of pulling someone back in if they fall out of the raft but when you pull them back up push them back down under the water because it will be easier because the life jacket will float back up.
The next activity was the rafting part, we started off on a escalator type thing but for kyaks then we went down and did a 360 turn going backwards towards the start of the artificial rapid river, and this time it was deep. The last activity we did was one of the best activitys was jumping in and floating down the fast rapid river, kind of like the lazy river but fast. Yesterday our instructor taught us about water safety and the dangers of a river, Yesterday I learnt how to pull someone back into the raft by using the shoulder parts of the life jacket, and I also learnt how to cross a river properly by knowing the signs. here are some signs, if the water in a river is above your waist it is to deep to cross, if you chuck something in the river and you have to jog after it the river is not safe to cross or jump in because of the rapid stream of water rushing through.

Tech

Today for tech we have been working on our art designs and have been looking for patterns and designs from your culture to put our art. The peices of art have five lines which can be sqaures, rectangles, or triangles and in them are your patterns or designs that you have chosen which relates to your culture.

Last HIIT Session

Today was our last HIIT training for this term, we have been doing HIIT for the pas fifteen weeks and have been doing it twice a week.  Our excercises were Tap step, push ups, star jumps, and sit ups. The people from AUT university are coming in tommorow to do somemore tests on us to see if we have improved. Our excercises have been improving every week and the sessions have been going good and every week they change. The AUT university named this program Pau Te Hau which means ''Get Puffed" that is the word we use and say every time during our HIIT sessions. Some of the excrcises are easy and some are hard, the easiest one for me would be tap step because all you have to do is move your legs side to side by tapping your heels together aswell as moving your arms up and down hitting your thighs. Our goal every time we do our HIIT sessions is to "Pau Te Hau" Get Puffed, and every single one of us have succeded in doing that. Our other goal is to get everyone into the red zone and encourage each other and the people how are in the yellow, green, or blue zone to push try harder to get into the red zone.

Exponents

Today for maths we have been learning about exponents. Our task today was to answer eighteen exponent questions and then choose three of them to do a DLO or a google slide on to explain how to do exponents. I chose questions one, twelve, and three because they were all cubed exponents. The question I found hard was question twelve because I am not that good at my eight times table. Today I learnt how to do exponents properly and familiarise myself with them.

Wheel Words

Today for reading our group did wheel words. When we play wheel words we set a timer to ten minutes, and that's all the time we get to find as many words as we can. I found eight out of thirty five 8/35 words, I think thirty five words are a lot of words to find in ten minutes. I managed to find 4/12 four letter words, 3/11 five letter words, 1/6 six letter words.

Rugby Union Competition

Yesterday we went to the Rugby Union Interschool competition, we played five games and only lost one which was against Pt. England, the rest of the games we had one. The school's we played were
Pt. England, Glenn Innes, St Pierres, Pt England Barbarian, and Bailey Road School, the best game we played was against St Pierres because we scored 11 - 2 agianst them. Our first game we played which was against Pt. England was the hardest game we played out of the five different schools we played. At rugby union my goal was to score at least one try and I achieved that goal by putting as much effort in as I can. Yesterday I really enjoyed playing against the other schools and I also enjoyed playing a good, fair, and fun game.

Orchestra

Today students from LS2 went to the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Hall to watch a performance by the Auckland Dance Project, St Kents/Ngatapawae, Opera singer, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra group. The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra group played three pieces of music and one of the pieces were fimiliar because it was called Romeo & Juliet. In these performences there were four different Sections or Instruments that were played which were the Brass, Woodwind, String, and the percussion family. When we were at the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Town Hall, the thing that caught my eye was the lights and also these big gigantic tube instrument things at the back of the hall. My favourite part of this experience was when a opera singer came out and sung an opera song, This was my first time going on this trip but.

Skytower Experience

Today we went to the Skytower for part of the day to learn about different structures in Auckland because our topic for inquiry is about man made structures. The Skytower is the tallest man made structure in New Zealand and weighs up to twenty one million kilograms, the equivalent to six thousand elephants, the skytower has one thousand two hundred and sixty seven stairs that continuously go from the base to the highest public observation level, which is the sky deck. Going to the Skytower was my first time. We are learning lots about different types of structures like bridges and other man made structures around the world and in New Zealand.

Wheel words

Today for reading we played wheel words, this was one of the easiest ones I did because the first word I found was Corkscrew. I also found almost six obscure words, obscure words are extra words that are not on the list. Today I found fifteen out of twenty one words.

Scaled Drawing

This week we have been working on and finishing off our scaled drawings for maths week. On the smaller grid the width and height of the frame was 12x10. The way I have drawn out my grid or frame is by ruling out 1cm of sqaures up, down, and across the page, then I moved on to my enlarged grid. But before I did that I did my lable which had my name, what we were doing, and the ratio on it which was 1:2. On the enlarged grid which was on a (A3 sized paper), I doubled the measurents so they were 24x20 and ruled a grid or a frame with 2cm sqaures. The thing that was hard for me was to go sqaure by sqaure and draw out the image carefully. This was my first time doing this activity so it was a bit of a challange, but I think I still need a bit more practice. The best part about doing this activity was drawing out the image and seeing how most parts of the image look alike.

Pechaflikr

This week for writing we were finishing off our pecha flickr storys that we had started on last week. For this writing activity we were working in parters, my partner was Christopher, the first thing we did was our pechaflikr slides then we did the story plan. When we had finished that we voice recoreded each other reading the story plan using ScreenCastify. The fun part about this activity was using ScreenCastify to voice record the story plan, because when we first started we didn't know how to do it. This week our group was learning how to structure or order a narrative story, and we were also learning how to link ideas between paragraphs to make a connection. In this narrative we were working on using strong words to paint a picture with words to not tell what was happening.

Lighthouse Story

This week we had got given a homework challange to do,for this challange we went on this website about the La Jument lighthouse in France and read about it.You didn't have to do the homework, but most of us did the homework that was set for us.The La Jument lighthouse is one of the most famous lighthouse's located in France of the coast of Brittany,
The La Jument is mostv famous for the picture and the story behind it. This week I learnt that being a lighthouse keeper can be fun and can sometimes be scary.I also know that the La Jument lighthouse still stands of the coast of Brittany in France.

Pros and Cons

Today in LS2 we were doing an activity as part of one of Mr Johnston's tasks about lighthouse's,Our task was to make a Pros and Cons list about living in a lighthouse. In our groups we gathered information to put on our list of Pros and Cons and we have all contributed and help out with an equal amount.I think living in a lighthouse will be pretty boring because you will be by yourself and because you can't do many things on your own.At the same time it will be cool because you can fish outside your window,if you like fishing, and you can also swim whenever you want. The Pros of living in a lighthouse are the,Views,No paying bills,No neighbors,Relaxation,Heaps of space, and much more. Throughout the week I learnt alot about lighhouse's,I wouldn't have known so much about lighthouse's if It wasn't for Mr Johnston.

Lighthouse For Sale Poster

During the week LS2 have been looking at and learning about lighthouse's.For this activity our task was to create a For Sale poster of a lighthouse of our choice,The lighthouse I chose to do was called The Historic Chesapeake Bay lighthouse located in America. In American dollars this lighthouse costs $US 15,00 but using an exchange calculator we exchanged this in to New Zealand money and turned out with this,
$NZ 22,160,25.In my poster I have included a photo and some of the features of this lighthouse, and I have put big pop writing of the word
FOR SALE to hook the veiwers in,so that this would be the first thing they look at.I have also included the price of the lighthouse at the bottom right corner of this poster.I really enjoyed doing this task because I liked how the price was exchanged into NZ money and how it was a big difference. This week I learnt how American money is a big difference to
New Zealand money.

ASB Getwise

Today we had a visitor from the ASB Getwise to talk to us about how to save our money. We have been learning about how to save money and have been talking about what we could buy with our money and how we could budget our money in the future. After we had done that we played a game which was about us going on holiday to Fiji, and our budget was $1,800.The aim of the game was to get the most points from whatever you buy,the higher the price was the more points you get.Flights $200 2pts,$700 10pts Accomadation $300 3pts,$600 9pts etc.Today I learnt how to borrow money from banks using a credit card and how we can budget our money by saving.I also learnt how to be money wise and to spend money on a budget.

The Bean Rock Lighthouse

Bean Rock in the Waitemata Harbour
The Bean Rock Lighthouse…
The Bean Rock lighthouse is one of the well known lighthouses in New Zealand which was lit on the 24th of July in 1871 and constructed in 1870 this unique looking lighthouse took 8 months to build and was at the cost of $2,762, the light was powered by ‘kerosene’ there were eight lighthouse keepers around 1971 to 1912, which are Hugh Brown (1871 - 1890)(First lighthouse keeper), James William Nicolson (1890), John Wheeler (1890 - 1896), Edward R. Wilson (1896 - 1900), Alexander McKinlay (1900 - 1906), William Colley (1906 - 1909), James Anderson (1909 - 1911) and finally Frederick Woodbury (1911 - 1912).
This Lighthouse is named (or called) after the master of HMS Herald. His name is Lieutenant P.C.D Bean, this person helped to carry out the first survey of Waitemata Harbour in 1840. There is also a Maori legend.
This lighthouse wasn’t the most popular place to work, the first keeper Mr. Brown (Hugh Brown) must have liked this lighthouse and was willing to work there,  the reason why he liked this lighthouse was because he had stayed there for more than 10 years (19 years)!. He liked that he cleaned it by scrubbing all the rust and sweeped the ground. Around the time he didn’t work there he earnt $150 each year!
You can find this lighthouse at Mission Bay in Auckland to maori people it is known as the Te-Toka-o-Kapetaua’s (Kapetaua’s rock) for the memory of Kapetaua

This week for Reading we have been looking at New Zealand lighthoues, Overall their are Twenty Three active lighthouses in New Zealand,
for this activity we had got givin a name of a lighthouse for each group,we were givin The Bean Rock lighthouse,Located in Mission Bay Auckland to research on.This week I learnt how lighthouses were put where they are and how some lighthouses are put in difficult places like on hills etc.I also learnt that back in the 1800's New Zealand got lighthouses from England, but they would ask for a lighthouse and then they would be delivered in pieces and in rings to be put up like how you would do now to build a toy or something.

The Inchcape Rock

This week for reading we read a ballad poem about the Inchcape Cape Rock, a ballad poem is a story about someone or something read in the form of a poem to make it shorter. In this activity we chose a verse from the poem and then we wrote it out, then explaining what that verse was about in our own words. This week I learnt about New Zealand lighthouses and which lighthouse was the oldest lighthouse in New Zealand was.It is near Wellington and is called the Pencarrow lighthouse.

Kiwi Can Reflection

Today for Kiwi Can we are learning about Integrity and Accountabilty. Our Kiwi Can leaders are Miss Lily and Mr Matt. This term Our Topic is Integrity and our Theme is Accountability. Our first activity was called Copy me, for this activity we had four groups and our captain of the group goes up and gets a card. Then what ever number we have is a number on the board followed by a move, action, or dance. Our energizer today was called Two truths One lie, for this activity we made a circle then everyone went around and told Two truths, and One lie. Then we had to guess which one was the Lie. Accountability means to take responsibility for our own actions and to own up to what we have done wrong. Accountability is a Value that we can live by, and are guide lines we can follow. In school we can be Accountable by showing Respect, Telling the Truth, and Self Managing ourselves. We can also show Accountibility in classes by getting to School on time, having a charged Chromebook, and by bringing our P.E gear every Thursday for Rugby League Training and for Kiwi Sport. Today I learnt what Accountability means, It means owning up to our own actions and taking responsibility for what we have done wrong.

Number Knowledge

Today for Maths we made a DLO about a word problem wad had got given. The word prblem was asking us to divide $202 Dollars among 7 people and to find out how mach each person received. The easiest way to do this Task was to work backwards because we had seen $49 Dollars the bottom.Instead of starting from the top trying to figure it out from there you can start from the bottom then use your basic facts skill to solve the problem.Today I learnt how to use my basic facts skills to help me solve this word problem and more to come, and how it taught me to understand it better by reading the text properly so I know what I am doing.

Fraction Word Problem

`

Today for maths we made a DLO about finding fractions of an amount in a word problems. For this task we answered Ten questions and then we chose one of our questions to show on our blog,I chose my last question because that was the one I liked better than the other questions.Today I learnt how to find fractions of an amount in word problems.

Cinema attendance DLO

This week for inquiry we made a DLO about Attendance at the Cinemas, then we explained our argument alongside the data we had gathered from the line graph in the DLO above.Writing these arguments out showed me that people 15 to 24 years of age are increasing every year by the attendance at the Cinemas because people between or aged 15 to 24 years old are most likely to have no job and because they may have no kids.

Kiwi Can:Reflection

Today for Kiwi Can we are learning about our Theme Integrity and our Topic Role models.Integrity means doing something good when no one else is looking and Role models means being a good leader so that people younger than you can look up to you and do the right thing. In Kiwi Can we played an enegizer game called out and under. The aim of the game is to get the ball through the other persons leg without kicking the ball, and you have to be in a circle only hitting the ball with your hand trying to get the other person out.

Making Connections

Today for Reading we read a story called make or break,it was about a boy named Josh who was sucked into the TV where he prefomed live at a Rock Show/Conest.The next task we did was that we did a making connections task.We use the making connections template to compare things we know that relate to the story, and the last one is our reaction to the story and what we think about it.

Charllotte Anne DLO

This week for reading we learnt about a Ballad Poem, a Ballad Poem is Poem that tells a story. My Partners, Carl,Tai,Julian, and Jonathan and I made a DLO about Charlotte Anne using the six thinking hats.White Hat:Listing the Facts, Red Hat:Feelings, Yellow Hat:Possibilities, Green Hat:Evaluation, Black Hat:Evaluation, Blue Hat:Evaluation.Today My Partners and I learnt that in the 1900's women were critized and were not aloud to do what men did. Therefore men did not accept women to do mens work or to do what men did,but Charllote Anne changed that she changed Mens perception of Women.

Reflex Experiment

This week for Inquiry we made a graph of Three Reflex tests to see how good our Reflexs are.The first Test was a Visual Test, you had to catch the ruler when your partner dropped it without any warnings, The Second Test is an Auditory Test, you have to close your eyes and wait for your partner to say go, The Third Test is a Tactile Test, you have to close your eyes and wait four your partner to tap you on the shoulder before you catch the Ruler.I predicted that I was good at Test 2 because Test 2 was the Auditory test, and because as soon as my partner says go I knew to close my hand straight away.My partner Christopher was good at Test 3 and 2,and my other partner Lyric was good at Test 2.

Coree: 1870 Life

Today for Reading we made a DLO using a Ven diagram, showing what kind of New Zealand jobs Men and Women did in the 1870's.Then as a group we talked and shared ideas or jobs people would have done in that time. After that we went online and reasearched things about the 1870's that could help us find what types of jobs they wold have done.Today I leart what a Bullokie is, a Bullockie is a Cow hearder and that back in 1870's Women had to dress in thick dress's and that they weren't aloud to do Men's work.Accept for one unusual Women [Charlotte Anne]...

Coree-Leap of Faith

My Leap Of Faith

The sun had just gone down and the moon began to slowly rise, the sounds of the city grew quieter and the sky grew darker. That’s when I knew that it was time to fly for the first time. I felt nervous, a strong gust of wind blew beneath me as I perched on that branch.

I was encouraged by a group of my friends and family who were all there to support me. I gripped my talons around the branch. I was excited as I take my first flight. I checked to see if there were any predators, I didn’t want my first flight to be my last!

I slowly lifted one leg. It felt scared and I’m sure the branch was swaying much more than it needed to. I planted my foot down gripping that tree with my talons as hard as I could.

I finally built up my courage and was brave enough to take the leap of faith. My heart was racing as I spread my wings and launched myself up into the air. I couldn’t believe it, I was flying!

As I soared through the air my wings felt alive and I could see everything on the ground, beetles scurrying across the ground,Oh wait... I can see worms squirming beneath the grass,I swooped down and grasped on to the worms.

I feel like I can do anything, now I can fly. Finally me and my friends can go and explore the sky.

This week for writing we read a narrative called The Leap of Faith. Then we wrote a narrative poem about an owls first flight and how it felt or what it was doing in the process of it taking his or her first flight. To help me write a good story I used powerful words, good sentence structure and strong paragraphs.Today I learnt that it's good to do things you haven't done before because you never know if  you try.

Kiwi Can

The theme for Kiwi Can this week was integrity and the Topic was Making good choices or bad choices.Integrity means doing the right thing when no one is looking.Today at Kiwi Can we learnt how we can make good choices in the playground and at lunch and how to resolve problems. Our energizers today were Opposites and Protect the Jedi.My favorite energizer this week was Save The Jedi. The aim of the game is to protect the person with the noodle stick (The Jedi) then he or she has to tag you with it it and without being hit with the ball, whilst the people in your team throw the ball at the other team trying to hit the Jedi.
