The Bean Rock Lighthouse

Bean Rock in the Waitemata Harbour
The Bean Rock Lighthouse…
The Bean Rock lighthouse is one of the well known lighthouses in New Zealand which was lit on the 24th of July in 1871 and constructed in 1870 this unique looking lighthouse took 8 months to build and was at the cost of $2,762, the light was powered by ‘kerosene’ there were eight lighthouse keepers around 1971 to 1912, which are Hugh Brown (1871 - 1890)(First lighthouse keeper), James William Nicolson (1890), John Wheeler (1890 - 1896), Edward R. Wilson (1896 - 1900), Alexander McKinlay (1900 - 1906), William Colley (1906 - 1909), James Anderson (1909 - 1911) and finally Frederick Woodbury (1911 - 1912).
This Lighthouse is named (or called) after the master of HMS Herald. His name is Lieutenant P.C.D Bean, this person helped to carry out the first survey of Waitemata Harbour in 1840. There is also a Maori legend.
This lighthouse wasn’t the most popular place to work, the first keeper Mr. Brown (Hugh Brown) must have liked this lighthouse and was willing to work there,  the reason why he liked this lighthouse was because he had stayed there for more than 10 years (19 years)!. He liked that he cleaned it by scrubbing all the rust and sweeped the ground. Around the time he didn’t work there he earnt $150 each year!
You can find this lighthouse at Mission Bay in Auckland to maori people it is known as the Te-Toka-o-Kapetaua’s (Kapetaua’s rock) for the memory of Kapetaua

This week for Reading we have been looking at New Zealand lighthoues, Overall their are Twenty Three active lighthouses in New Zealand,
for this activity we had got givin a name of a lighthouse for each group,we were givin The Bean Rock lighthouse,Located in Mission Bay Auckland to research on.This week I learnt how lighthouses were put where they are and how some lighthouses are put in difficult places like on hills etc.I also learnt that back in the 1800's New Zealand got lighthouses from England, but they would ask for a lighthouse and then they would be delivered in pieces and in rings to be put up like how you would do now to build a toy or something.

The Inchcape Rock

This week for reading we read a ballad poem about the Inchcape Cape Rock, a ballad poem is a story about someone or something read in the form of a poem to make it shorter. In this activity we chose a verse from the poem and then we wrote it out, then explaining what that verse was about in our own words. This week I learnt about New Zealand lighthouses and which lighthouse was the oldest lighthouse in New Zealand was.It is near Wellington and is called the Pencarrow lighthouse.

Kiwi Can Reflection

Today for Kiwi Can we are learning about Integrity and Accountabilty. Our Kiwi Can leaders are Miss Lily and Mr Matt. This term Our Topic is Integrity and our Theme is Accountability. Our first activity was called Copy me, for this activity we had four groups and our captain of the group goes up and gets a card. Then what ever number we have is a number on the board followed by a move, action, or dance. Our energizer today was called Two truths One lie, for this activity we made a circle then everyone went around and told Two truths, and One lie. Then we had to guess which one was the Lie. Accountability means to take responsibility for our own actions and to own up to what we have done wrong. Accountability is a Value that we can live by, and are guide lines we can follow. In school we can be Accountable by showing Respect, Telling the Truth, and Self Managing ourselves. We can also show Accountibility in classes by getting to School on time, having a charged Chromebook, and by bringing our P.E gear every Thursday for Rugby League Training and for Kiwi Sport. Today I learnt what Accountability means, It means owning up to our own actions and taking responsibility for what we have done wrong.

Number Knowledge

Today for Maths we made a DLO about a word problem wad had got given. The word prblem was asking us to divide $202 Dollars among 7 people and to find out how mach each person received. The easiest way to do this Task was to work backwards because we had seen $49 Dollars the bottom.Instead of starting from the top trying to figure it out from there you can start from the bottom then use your basic facts skill to solve the problem.Today I learnt how to use my basic facts skills to help me solve this word problem and more to come, and how it taught me to understand it better by reading the text properly so I know what I am doing.

Cinema attendance DLO

This week for inquiry we made a DLO about Attendance at the Cinemas, then we explained our argument alongside the data we had gathered from the line graph in the DLO above.Writing these arguments out showed me that people 15 to 24 years of age are increasing every year by the attendance at the Cinemas because people between or aged 15 to 24 years old are most likely to have no job and because they may have no kids.

Kiwi Can:Reflection

Today for Kiwi Can we are learning about our Theme Integrity and our Topic Role models.Integrity means doing something good when no one else is looking and Role models means being a good leader so that people younger than you can look up to you and do the right thing. In Kiwi Can we played an enegizer game called out and under. The aim of the game is to get the ball through the other persons leg without kicking the ball, and you have to be in a circle only hitting the ball with your hand trying to get the other person out.

Making Connections

Today for Reading we read a story called make or break,it was about a boy named Josh who was sucked into the TV where he prefomed live at a Rock Show/Conest.The next task we did was that we did a making connections task.We use the making connections template to compare things we know that relate to the story, and the last one is our reaction to the story and what we think about it.

This week for reading we learnt about a Ballad Poem, a Ballad Poem is Poem that tells a story. My Partners, Carl,Tai,Julian, and Jonathan and I made a DLO about Charlotte Anne using the six thinking hats.White Hat:Listing the Facts, Red Hat:Feelings, Yellow Hat:Possibilities, Green Hat:Evaluation, Black Hat:Evaluation, Blue Hat:Evaluation.Today My Partners and I learnt that in the 1900's women were critized and were not aloud to do what men did. Therefore men did not accept women to do mens work or to do what men did,but Charllote Anne changed that she changed Mens perception of Women.

Reflex Experiment

This week for Inquiry we made a graph of Three Reflex tests to see how good our Reflexs are.The first Test was a Visual Test, you had to catch the ruler when your partner dropped it without any warnings, The Second Test is an Auditory Test, you have to close your eyes and wait for your partner to say go, The Third Test is a Tactile Test, you have to close your eyes and wait four your partner to tap you on the shoulder before you catch the Ruler.I predicted that I was good at Test 2 because Test 2 was the Auditory test, and because as soon as my partner says go I knew to close my hand straight away.My partner Christopher was good at Test 3 and 2,and my other partner Lyric was good at Test 2.
